Plans for a new coal mine near Glenden with potential to deliver 400 jobs for the region have been welcomed by Isaac Regional Mayor Anne Baker.

Queensland Coal Exploration has submitted an environmental impact statement for the Hillalong mine project in the Bowen Basin, with construction to start in the second quarter of 2017, pending approvals.

Two open-cut pits and two underground longwall mines are proposed, producing about 4.2 million tonnes of run-of-mine coal per annum.

Cr Baker said with recent job cuts, everyone was aware of the need for genuine employment opportunities across Isaac.

“The mine is located at Glenden and is 60km north-west of Nebo,” she said.

“Around 75 per cent of the workforce is expected to come from the Isaac, Whitsunday and Mackay region.

“This is an excellent economic boost for local workers, their families and the Isaac region as a whole.”
